Celebrating Black History Month at Youth PWR: Reclaiming Narratives Through Food, Stories, and Shared Culture

This year’s Black History Month theme, Reclaiming Narratives, resonates profoundly with our mission at Youth PWR, where we empower young people to embrace their voices and shape their futures. The theme encourages us all to celebrate our heritage, share our stories, and shift perceptions around Black identity and history. For us, reclaiming narratives means recognising the richness of our collective past while celebrating the vibrant identities and cultures that each individual brings to our community.

One of the most memorable ways we engaged with this theme was through a special lunch prepared by our staff member Serekia, who brought in an authentic Jamaican meal to share with the team. Her delicious jerk chicken, rice and peas, and homemade sorrel drink weren’t just a culinary treat, they were a celebration of heritage and an invitation for us all to connect with Jamaican and Black culture in a meaningful way.

As we gathered around the table, enjoying the flavours and hearing about the traditions behind them, our team opened up about our own backgrounds and the cultural elements that shape who we are. We shared memories of family gatherings, recounted our favourite childhood dishes, and celebrated the unique ways we each honour our roots. These conversations reminded us of the importance of reclaiming and celebrating the diversity of Black identities and experiences, especially those that don’t often receive the recognition they deserve.

In that shared space, we were each able to celebrate our own narratives, recognising that our stories are not confined to history books, they live on through us in the recipes we share, the traditions we hold, and the ways we come together in community. This meal was not just a celebration of Jamaican food; it was an affirmation of narratives that highlight the beauty, diversity, and resilience within the Black community and beyond.

Through this experience, Youth PWR reaffirmed its commitment to creating a workplace where everyone’s story is valued and their heritage celebrated. We are incredibly grateful to Serekia for preparing all the amazing food, and we look forward to continuing to reclaim, share, and honour each other’s narratives.

Happy Black History Month from all of us at Youth PWR, let’s keep reclaiming and celebrating together!
