This month's Rooms Project, we embraced the theme "Art of Legacy" in celebration of Black History Month. Our goal was not just to look back but to honour the power of creativity in shaping and preserving Black history. Through painting, drawing, lively discussion, and sharing a special themed meal, participants explored the rich legacy of Black heritage, celebrated key historical figures, and reflected deeply on what Black History Month means to each of them.
We encouraged everyone to connect with Black history by expressing themselves artistically, using images, symbols, and colours that resonate with the culture, resilience, and achievements of Black people through time. From vibrant abstract paintings to realistic portraits, participants captured moments, messages, and figures that represent Black pride, strength, and progress. It was inspiring to see how each person brought a unique perspective to their artwork, interpreting Black history through various lenses.Â
As part of the experience, our team provided young participants with a delicious lunch featuring Caribbean and African-themed dishes. The meals were thoughtfully chosen to give them a true taste of the cultures they were honouring, adding a sense of connection to the history and traditions they were celebrating.
While the paint brushes were moving, discussions about Black history added depth to the artistic journey. But the discussions went beyond history; they allowed each participant to express what Black History Month means personally, sharing memories of learning Black history in school. Everyone had the chance to speak, listen, and learn, creating a space where perspectives could be shared openly and respectfully.
Our Rooms Project brought young people together to connect, create, and celebrate Black history in a way that felt deeply personal and powerful. The artwork produced, the stories shared were a testament to how creativity can honour history and inspire a sense of unity and pride.
Let’s keep creating, celebrating, and honouring the art of legacy every day.
