Welcoming three students for work experience at Youth PWR

Between June and July, we had the pleasure of hosting three students for work experience at Youth PWR. It was a simple but important reminder of why placements like this matter. When young people get the chance to step into a real working environment, ask questions, contribute to tasks, and be trusted with responsibility, something shifts. Confidence grows, skills become real, and the world of work starts to feel less distant.

Across the placements, we built a structured week that gave each student a proper overview of what we do as a charity and how an organisation like ours operates day to day. The focus was not just on “watching”, but on doing. From the start, they were encouraged to take part, communicate professionally, and work as a team.

What the week included

Over the five days, students were introduced to:

  • Research tasks and why research matters in a professional setting

  • Writing professional emails, including what tone to use and how to communicate clearly

  • Joining a team meeting and contributing ideas

  • Exploring how and why charities use social media, then testing this in practice

  • Project planning and preparing a short end-of-week presentation

  • Helping to organise and prepare a workspace ahead of an upcoming project

  • Presenting back what they had learned, followed by feedback and encouragement

What the students said

We always want young people to leave Youth PWR feeling more informed, more confident, and more ready for what is next. Hearing their reflections was a real highlight.

One student shared:

“The 5-day work experience at Youth PWR has been very useful; I gained valuable knowledge about the Charity itself and how it operates, I also developed new skills in communication and teamwork… Overall, it was a very educating and nice experience.”

Another reflected:

“A week of work experience at Youth PWR has really helped me gain a better understanding of what working in an office environment is like… I was able to come out of my shell and communicate with people I didn’t know personally. Overall, it was a great experience and one that will be very useful as I continue on my future career path.”

Why this links directly to our mission

Youth PWR exists to empower young people and create opportunities that help them build stronger futures. Work experience is one of the most practical ways to do that. It gives young people exposure to professional standards, transferable skills, and the confidence that comes from being treated as capable.

We are proud of each student who joined us this summer, and we are grateful they chose to spend their week with our team.

If you are a school, college, parent, or local employer interested in partnering with us to offer more meaningful work experience opportunities for young people, we would love to connect.
